The New England Patriots rallied from a ten-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-20 on Sunday in the AFC Championship at Gillette Stadium.
The win sends the Patriots to the Super Bowl for the second straight season and third time in the last four years. It will be the ninth Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.
The Patriots will await the winner of the NFC Championship game between the Eagles and Vikings.
Patriots Rally in 4th
Trailing 20-17 with just under three minutes to play, Tom Brady connected with Danny Amendola in the back of the end zone to give the Patriots a 24-20 lead after a Gostkowski extra point.
The lead was the Patriots first lead since they went up 3-0 in the first quarter.
On Jacksonville’s final possession, Stephon Gilmore broke up a Blake Bortles pass on fourth and 14 to give the Patriots the ball back.
The Patriots sealed the win when Dion Lewis broke and 18-yard run helped by a block from Brown University grad James Develin to seal the win.
Prior to the Patriots taking the lead, New England trailed 20-10 at the start of the fourth quarter after Jacksonville’s Josh Lambo converted a 43-yard field goal.
The Patriots would pull within three two possessions later when Brady found Amendola for a nine-yard touchdown pass to cut the Patriots deficit to 20-17 after a Gostkowski extra point.
Brady finished the game completing 26 of 38 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns.
Gronkowski Leaves Game
Gronkowski left the game in the third quarter after being hit in the head by Jacksonville’s Barry Church. Church was called for a personal foul on the play.
Gronkowski was diagnosed with a concussion and was ruled out of the game midway through the fourth quarter.
Prior to leaving, Gronkowski had one catch for 21 yards.
Jacksonville Takes Control Early
After the Patriots took a 3-0 lead on a Stephen Gostkowski field goal, the Jaguars took over.
In the second quarter, Jacksonville’s Mercedes Lewis caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Bortles to put the Jaguars up 7-3 following an extra point from kicker Josh Lambo.
Later in the second, Jacksonville was still up 7-3 when running back Leonard Fournette rushed four yards into the end zone to put the Jaguars up 14-3.
The score capped off a ten-play, 77-yard drive for Jacksonville that took just over six minutes.
The Patriots got their first touchdown of the game just before the half when James White ran it in from one-yard out to cut the Patriots deficit to 14-10.
The drive was helped by two penalties on the Jaguars, a personal foul on Church for a hit to the head on Gronkowski, and a pass interference penalty that set New England up inside the red zone.
