The New England Patriots traded third string quarterback Jacoby Brissett and cut their roster to 53 players on Saturday.

Brissett was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for wide receiver/punt returner Phillip Dorsett.

According to reports, the Patriots also acquired Detroit defensive back Johnson Bademosi for an undisclosed draft pick.

Dorsett With Colts

Dorsett was a 2015 first round pick out of the University of Miami.

Last season with the Colts, Dorsett hauled in 33 catches for 528 yards and two touchdowns.

He also returned two punts for the Colts after returning 25 punts in college.

The Patriots are in need of a punt returner with Julian Edelman and Cyrus Jones both out for the season.

Patriots Cuts

Players that the Patriots cut include wide receivers Devin Lucien, Tony Washington and K.J. Maye, running back D.J. Foster, rookie running back LeShun Daniels, fullback Glenn Gronkowski, rookie tight end Sam Cotton, rookie offensive linemen Tony Garcia, Jason King, and Max Rich, offensive lineman Jamil Douglas, rookie defensive backs Jason Thompson, D.J. Killings, Kenny Moore and Damarius Travis, linebackers Jonathan Freeny, Shea McClellin and Trevor Bates, defensive tackle Vincent Valentine, and rookie defensive linemen Josh Augusta and Mikey Bart.

On Friday, the Patriots traded cornerback Justin Coleman to the Seattle Seahawks for a future draft pick.

Edelman, Jones and Derek Rivers will all be placed on injured reserve.

  • Cyrus Jones Injury

Cornerback Cyrus Jones went down in the second quarter with a non-contact knee injury.

Jones was in coverage down near the sideline when his knee gave out while chasing a New York's Travis Rudolph. He did not return to the game.

He will have an MRI on Friday morning.

If Jones is out for any length of time, the Patriots will need to come up with a replacement kick/punt returner.

Danny Amendola has done it before, Dion Lewis has also seen time returning kicks and punts in training camp and preseason.

Brandin Cooks and Patrick Chung have also returned punts and kicks in their career.

  • Jacoby Brissett

Jacoby Brissett started and played the entire game for the Patriots.

In the game, Brissett completed 27 of 35 passes for 340 yards and four passing touchdowns and another rushing touchdown. He had one interception early in the game.

With less than two minutes to play, Brissett led the Patriots on seven play 32-yard drive resulting in a Stephen Gostkowski 55-yard field goal to put the Patriots up 38-37 in the game.

Brissett also led scoring drives of 14 and 12 plays respectively.

  • Patriots Defense

Geneo Grissom had a sack of Giants quarterback Geno Smith in the first quarter, but overall the Patriots second string defense looked shaky.

New England gave 34 points in the first half before just allowing two field goals in the second half.

The Patriots have been hurt by injuries this preseason and are short on depth on the front seven.

  • Austin Carr

Undrafted rookie Austin Carr is in a battle to make the team at one of the final roster spots.

In the final preseason game, Carr had three catches for 48 yards and one touchdown.

One player that Carr could be battling with for a final receiver spot is Devin Lucien. Lucien hauled in five passes for 96 yards and a touchdown in the game.
